The Communication Teaching Resource Pack
The Communication Teaching Resource Pack is designed to provide the complete package to enable teachers to provide an effective half day teaching session devoted to Communication skills. This teaching resource CD includes a PowerPoint presentation that incorporates a number of short video clips. These videos illustrate numerous serious communication errors while others demonstrate good communication.
The Pack also includes the 'Communication for the Intensive Care Specialist' book.
The presentation is engaging for trainees and by identifying faults trainees can consider their own communication approach and skills
The PowerPoint presentation goes on to describe the components of good communication and outlines an approach to assist trainees to consider the issues before they commence meetings with individual families (or with others such as colleagues).
The PowerPoint presentation takes about one hour to present (with participant interaction). The presentation is designed to be self explanatory and can be presented by any trainer to trainees without requiring any significant prior preparation.
Also included on the CD is a resource of pre-prepared scenarios for trainees to use in order to practice, and improve, their communication skills. Using the scenarios it is suggested that trainees rotate roles as:
• the doctor
• the patient/relative etc
• the observer (who says nothing during the discussion but leads the critique of the doctor’s performance)
It is useful for doctors to experience the role of the patient or relative as this often provides insight into their experience of which doctors are otherwise often unaware.
The Communication Resource Pack is intended to be used in conjunction with the book ‘Communication for the Intensive Care Specialist’ also published by Erudite Medical Books.
